-An unusual class of furry recom can be found sometimes: genderless beings known as androgynes. Here is a bit of history and other information about them:
-Before the Apocalypse War, when creating furry workers was big business in some parts of the world, the androgynes were invented. These are genderless furry workers -- sort of like worker bees. Because they have no reproductive system, they have about 10% to 15% more energy for the rest of their metabolism. This also served as a form of patent protection or copy-protection: you don't have to worry about people taking the recoms you spent billions to develop and simply breeding them.
-Androgynes were fairly common before the war and immediately afterwards. The reason why they are rarely seen today is not hard to figure out.
-However, they didn't all simply die out. Once the patent lawyers back on Earth had been nuked out of existence, androgynes could be cloned and their offspring could be genetically tweaked to come out as normal male or female (or herm!) furries. Thus, it's possible that a fair number of today's recoms have androgyne ancestors. And it is also possible, once in a while, for a small mutation to re-activate those androgyne genes, or for a couple of androgyne-descended furs to mate and accidentally produce androgyne offspring. When an androgyne is conceived, the condition can be detected by genetic tests, and it can be corrected and given a gender at the early embryonic stage. The further cell division progresses, the harder it is to change, so that a fur born as an androgyne is pretty much stuck that way.
-Although androgynes lack sex organs and cannot have children in the normal way, it is not impossible for them to produce offspring. They can be cloned, and the clone implanted in a host mother. Also, androgyne cells can be converted medically into haploid cells and used to fertilize a female cell, so androgynes can effectively become fathers.  The same procedure can be used to produce an egg cell, allowing the androgyne to become -- genetically speaking -- a mother.
-As for the androgyne characters: they have no sex organs, either male or female. They usually have strong constitutions and immune systems. They can occur in almost any recom species. Their build can vary somewhat, especially in muscular development, and trying to guess their gender at a glance can be quite puzzling.  Historically androgynes used female pronouns, but those traditions are nearly forgotten now, so you can usually get away with calling an androgyne he, she, or shi/sie -- but saying "it" would be impolite.
-Mentally, androgynes are surprisingly normal. They tend to be cheerful and energetic (it's that 10%+ metabolic bonus), and they can also be affectionate, and they may even like to cuddle or snuggle. They make friends indiscriminately among males, females, and others. Yet, they don't have what most furs would recognize as a sex drive, and they generally think the whole idea of furs inserting body parts into each other's orifices is a rather nasty idea.
-Androgynes remain fairly uncommon among the population. However, they never seem to disappear completely. Some recoms are born as androgynes due to genetic mischance. If their condition is not identified and corrected by the early embryonic state of development, it is usually considered best to let them develop normally as androgynes. Some parents still choose to have have androgyne children. Androgynes are very well tolerated in almost all societies, and are often considered to have an advantage when seeking employment.
